In preparation of our upcoming beach trip (10+ hours driving time), we decided to expose the kids to DVDs. I started "exposing" them about a month ago. We started off watching small segments of The Polar Express and worked our way up to watching the entire movie. We do not watch DVDs all day long, but Isaac has become quite attached to his "choo-choo".
Fast forward twenty years...it will be a beer in his hand and sports on the tube.
Last week, the kids were introduced to the ability to watch "Choo-Choo" in the car. I needed to drive to Anderson one morning and didn't want the kids snoozing in the car (which would eliminate the need for an afternoon nap, and afternoon nap = break time for Mommy). It worked wonderfully! Until I decided to throw in Cars for the return trip to mix things up a bit and Isaac had a meltdown. Lesson learned...introduce new movies at home, then if they are accepted, offer in the car.
Even though watching the DVD player in the car worked quite well, we have decided to implement a DVD/car rule. The trip must be at least an hour's drive for the DVD player to be used. We don't want the kids asking to watch a movie every time we get in the car.
When we return from the beach, the kids will be limited to one movie per day while it is hot. And when it cools down outside, that will be reduced to one movie every couple of days. (I'm sure there will be a lot of whining when we return.)
